Afemata was born in Long Beach, California and grew up in nearby Compton with six siblings in a Samoan American family.[3] As a child, Afemata became interested in reggae music when his sister played the Bob Marley song "Jamming" on the piano.[4] His siblings gave Afemata the nickname "Boog", a play on "boogie" and reference to him not being able to sit still.[4] Afemata first sang for an audience at age nine when his mother had him and his sister sing the Whitney Houston song "One Moment in Time" at a family reunion.[5]
At the age of four, after hearing his older sister playing the piano, J began singing. A while later, she brought home a Bob Marley song book. Even at this young age, J knew Bob's name and his music. The first time J Boog performed in front of an audience, he was nine years old.

The results are apparent when listening to Boog's music. It is authentic Island Music and genuine Jamaican reggae at the same time -- truly a new and exciting combination. There is a natural theme to Boog's writing: love. It recurs throughout his work. When you listen, you will feel he truly knows matters of the heart.
These days radio interviews have become a daily thing and it's a little overwhelming for the young artist, though J has kept his humility. He has a great sense of humor and an even better sense of reality. He can be overheard saying how blessed he is on a daily basis. It's easy to see why J Boog has been winning fans. He has the right spirit and attitude.
Hot Rain, nearly 12 years in the making is more than a band. Their persistence through the "up's and downs" of the music business is what sets them apart from their peers. Their humble beginnings, love of music, and loyalty to each other cannot only be heard but felt every time they take to the stage.
